History and origins of national pizza day
In the tenth century, the date began to be celebrated in Naples, Italy, where Pizza was created.
Equally important, Pizza was born when an Italian woman mixed tomato, flour, cheese, olives, and spice to make a type of flatbread to sell in the streets as an affordable meal for the poor.
In addition, Pizza would remain little known in Italy beyond Naples borders until the 1940s.
But, then, immigrants to the United States from Naples were replicating their flatbreads in New York and other American cities, and the dish slowly began to catch on.
It was not until after World War II that Pizza really took off in the United States when soldiers returning from Italy brought a taste for the dish back home with them.
In 1984, President Ronald Reagan explicitly recognized National Pizza Day as February 9.
