Are You Carrying The World on your Shoulders? [Try a Life Spotter!]

During my workout in the gym one morning, I noticed a group of guys working out their triceps with dumbbells, just like I was. However, there were two differences:

1. There were 3 of them working out together, and I was alone.

2. They were using 125 lbs dumbbells, whereas I had 20 lbs.

Although the weight was quite heavy (relatively to what I was lifting), two of the three guys were able to lift it with some help from one of the other guys. The third guy, who was visibly stronger, based on the definition and size of his ripped arms, lifted the 125 lbs weight with no help.

What I noticed, however, was that the more repetitions he did, the heavier the weight seemed, as evidenced by the grimace on his face and eventually, he needed the assistance of one of his friends to complete the set.

What can we learn from this observation?

We should not compare our ability to handle problems with that of the next person. When faced with adversity, we must strive to do the best we can with what we have. When we are unable to handle our problems, or ‘lift the weight’, we should seek the help of people whom we trust.

In time, if we are consistent and persistent, we will get stronger and eventually be able to work through more issues, or ‘lift more weight’ with less help.

Remember, however, that the ‘heavier’ the problem, the more crucial it is to get experienced help and support, as a bodybuilder does from a certified trainer.

Reflection:

Over the years, I have been blessed to be surrounded by people who helped me carry the heavy weight of life’s challenges, in essence, making the weight lighter. I don’t know where I would be without their assistance. I try to make the effort throughout the year to reach out to each of them and express my appreciation and gratitude. I also strive to pay it forward and be that person who lightens the load for others along the way.

I encourage each of you to reach out to thank at least one person who has helped you along your journey.

Thank You Kendall!
